Soon to be Leaving Newcastle!

It's that time of the semester again!

Ladies and gentlemen this is our final full week in Newcastle for an entire month!!

Tina Fey and Amy Poehler doing interpretive dance of our excitement.

We are sooo excited because we are 1 week and 4 days away from our big continental Europe trip! Here's the map again for your reference:

We will be hitting all of these cities over the next month! We're visiting Berlin, Prague, Rome, Munich, Venice and Vienna.

Since I'll be incommunicado from March 13 - April 13 I wanted to be sure I got one last post out there.

So what is there to see in these cities? Here is a list of the things I'm most looking forward to doing or seeing in each city:

Berlin, Germany: DDR Museum
This museum gives visitors an interactive experience of what life was like behind the Iron Curtain.  From crimes of State Security to daily life of families, all aspects of this fallen regime are on display here.

Prague, Czech Republic: TIE between Prague Castle and Divadlo Minor Puppet Show
Prague Castle is a castle...in Prague. It is the seat of the head of state as well as a functioning museum that houses the crown jewels.  WIthin the castle is the Basilica of St. Vilinus which houses its own history and treasures.  A castle has been on the site since the year 800.
The Divadlo Minor is a puppet theater in Prague that performs world-famous puppet shows.  I've never seen a puppet show before, well at least not one that wasn't in a kindergarten classroom, so this should be interesting.

Rome, Italy: The Colosseum
Now I know what some of you must be thinking: Hey, didn't you already go to Rome like 7 years ago? How could you not have seen the Colosseum.
Well you'd think I would have, wouldn't you. Yes, I was in Rome 7 years ago but, no I did not see the Colosseum.  Because of travel plans, there simply wasn't enough time.  I mean I saw the outside of it but I didn't get a chance to see inside.  The first thing Carly and I have planned for Rome is the Colosseum so I can officially right this terrible wrong.

Munich, Germany: Neuschwanstein Castle
If you've never heard of it, Google it.
We've reserved a day-long tour of this beautiful castle.  Its the castle that the Magic Kingdom's castle is based on.  I've seen the Disney one a bunch of times and now I get to see the one its modeled after!

Venice, Italy: Murano and Burano Islands
The only major touring activity we have planned for Venice is a tour of the Murano and Burano factory island.  On Murano they make world famous Venetian glass and on Burano they make equally famous lace.  Hopefully I'll be able to bring some home with me!

Vienna, Austria: State Hall of the National Library
Libraries seem kind of dull to include on a European tour but the State Hall in the Austrian National Library is like the Versailles of libraries (Take a virtual tour!):
I'm probably more excited to see this library than most of the things on our trip!
So that's the highlights that you all can look forward to reading more about later in April.

In other news, I'm finishing up my dissertation proposal which is a paper that says what I'm going to write about.  I'm kind of winging it because I've never written one before but I'm doing a lot of research about dissertations and hopefully everything will go according to plan. My official research question is: How did the Francoist victory in the Spanish Civil War influence Spanish popular opinion of the Catholic Church?
I became interested in the Spanish Civil War while doing research for a previous class so this seemed like a good area to study. Also, Pan's Labyrinth is my favorite movie so I'm really looking forward to learning more about this subject.

Unfortunately that is all I have to report this week. I've been working so hard I haven't really had time to post or anything but, as you all know, I'll have some awesome pictures and stories to post when I get back from my trip!

See you all in a month!
